How to form the letter Y
Tracing is the gentlest way into handwriting, and the letter Y worksheet gives kids big dotted guide letters to trace before they try it solo. Here is how each form is made, in the words you can say out loud as they trace.
Uppercase Y: Start at the top-left. Slant one short line down to the middle. Lift to the top-right and slant a second short line down to meet it at that same middle point. Then, from the join, pull one straight line down to the baseline. A little V on a stick.
Lowercase y: Start at the midline on the left. Pull down, curve round the bottom and up to the midline on the right — then pull straight down below the baseline, curving into a hook to the left. A small u with a tail that hangs under the line.
Once the shape feels familiar, hunt for the letter in real words — yak, yarn, yo-yo, yacht and yellow all start with Y. Saying the sound while tracing the shape is how the letter really sticks (a yak, some yarn and a yo-yo all start with Y).
