Where can I print a free letter J tracing worksheet?

Right here. Hello Playdate has a free, printable letter J tracing worksheet — the uppercase J and lowercase j in dotted guide letters on handwriting lines, then a blank line to write them solo. No sign-up, no watermark; it prints on plain A4 or US Letter paper.

How to form the letter J

Tracing is the gentlest way into handwriting, and the letter J worksheet gives kids big dotted guide letters to trace before they try it solo. Here is how each form is made, in the words you can say out loud as they trace.

Uppercase J: Start at the top. Pull one straight line straight down, then near the bottom curve it round to the left like the bottom of a hook. Lift, and add one short flat line across the very top. A fishhook with a hat.

Lowercase j: Start at the midline and pull one straight line down — keep going below the baseline — then curve it round to the left into a hook. Lift up and add one small dot on top. A long hook that dips under the line, with a dot above.

Once the shape feels familiar, hunt for the letter in real words — jam, jug, jet, jacket and jellyfish all start with J. Saying the sound while tracing the shape is how the letter really sticks (some jam, a jug and a jet all start with J).

Why letter tracing works

Builds pencil control

Tracing the dotted guides trains the grip, pressure and stroke order that all later handwriting is built on.

Letter recognition that sticks

Seeing, saying and tracing the J together cements the shape and sound far better than rote drilling.
