How to form the letter D
Tracing is the gentlest way into handwriting, and the letter D worksheet gives kids big dotted guide letters to trace before they try it solo. Here is how each form is made, in the words you can say out loud as they trace.
Uppercase D: Start at the top. Pull one straight line straight down to the baseline. Lift back to the top of that line and make one big curve that bulges out to the right and comes back to the bottom of the line. A straight back with one round tummy.
Lowercase d: Start just under the dashed midline and draw a small round circle (anticlockwise, like a c that closes). Then lift to the very top, and pull one tall straight line straight down the right-hand side to the baseline. A ball with a tall stick on its right.
Once the shape feels familiar, hunt for the letter in real words — dog, duck, door, dinosaur and drum all start with D. Saying the sound while tracing the shape is how the letter really sticks (a dog, a duck and a dinosaur all start with D).
